Description

Johann Philipp Kessler (born 12 Jun 1674, died 10 January 1751) and Agatha Euler (born 4 March 1669, died 22 June 1742) married in Bommersheim on 25 January 1700. One of their children was Johann Georg Kessler, baptized in Bommersheim on 17 February 1709. Johann Georg was married three times. His marriage to his first wife, Anna Catharina, was not found in the Bommersheim records. They had one child, Anna Margaretha, baptized in Bommersheim on 13 March 1744. The widowed Johann Georg Kessler, a baker, married again on 14 January 1746 to Anna Margaretha Wolff, the widow of Johann Wilhelm Kiz. This couple had one child, Anna Ursula, who was baptized in Bommersheim on 25 April 1748. Anna Margareatha died at age 40 on 10 February 1750. Johann Georg then married for a third time, to Anna Margaretha Hahn, the daughter of Heinrich Sebastian Hahn and his wife Anna Catharina, on 3 May 1751. This couple had three children: Johannes, baptized 14 February 1752 in Bommersheim; Johann Philipp, baptized 9 March 1754 in Oberhöchstadt; and Agatha, baptized 13 May 1757 in Bommersheim (died 18 August 1759).

Johann Georg Kessler, described as a Catholic baker from Mainz, his wife Anna Margaretha, and their sons Johannes and Johann Philipp arrived in Russia on 31 May 1766.

Johann Georg appears to have died at some point during the journey to the villages. On the Preuss First Settlers List (1767 Census), his widow has married Johannes Schmidt and she and her children are reported in Household #3. The published translation of the First Settlers List states that this Schmidt family came from Oberursel, a village near Bommersheim.

There are several Kessler individuals reported on the 1798 Censuses of Dehler, Preuss and Hölzel who are likely members of this family. The Dehler 1798 Census reports Philipp Käserer from Preuss in Household #43, with a note in the published translation that the Agricultural Census gives his surname as Kessler. The 1798 Hölzel Census reports Johann Kessler from Preuss in Household #25 and the movement tables indicate that he moved there in 1790. The 1798 Census of Preuss reports Johannes Kessler in Household #72.
