Johann Georg Ewig, son of Johann Konrad & Anna Margaretha Ewig, was born on 21 April 1740 in Schriesheimer Hof, Kurpfalz. The family also lived in the village of Wilhelmsfeld.
Johann Georg and his brothers (Johann Nikolaus, b. 1727, and Johann Michael, b. 1731) immigrated first to Denmark (Schleswig-Holstein). On 13 June 1760, Georg married in Thorning, Denmark, to Maria Margaretha Philbert (see Philbert family). She had been born on 3 April 1736 in Gronau.
Georg and his wife had two children according to Danish parish records: Susanna Margaretha, baptized 14 June 1761 and Anna Elisabeth, baptized 2 November 1762, both in Friderichsheede, Karup Parish, Viborg Amt. Nikolaus and his wife also had two children, an unnamed daughter, baptized 13 June 1760 in Thorning, Denmark; and Maria Barbara, baptized 23 February 1762 in Friderichsheede, Karup Parish, Viborg Amt.
The three brothers and their families left Denmark in 1763 and immigrated to Russia. They settled in the colony of Anton on 7 September 1764 where they are listed on the 1767 census in Households No. 25 (Georg), No. 42 (Nikolaus), and No. 43 (Michael).
